Jamaican opener Xavier Marshall has gained a stunning recall to the
West Indies team in a 15-man squad announced Saturday for the World
Twenty20 Championships in England next month.
The 23-year old Marshall, who was dumped by selectors after just one
Test against England on the recent Caribbean tour because of poor form,
has gotten the nod from selectors yet again despite having also failed
in domestic season for Jamaica.
He will join 21-year-old Windward Islands batsman Andre Fletcher and
all-rounder David Bernard Jr as the three new players called up to the
existing West Indies One-Day International squad already chosen for the
three-match NatWest series against England starting later this month.
Bernard is a member of the current Test squad but was overlooked for the ODIs.
Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul and opening batsman Dale Richards, both
included in the ODI squad, have been axed for the game’s shortest form.

Last week’s action in the CASA Super League saw FC Internaxionale
becoming the second team to qualify for the playoffs in the 2009
campaign. Goals from former Jamaica youth representatives Ricardo
Ximines and Horace Howell powered FC Internaxionale to a convincing 2-0
win over newcomers Carib United FC on Saturday at the Lauderhill Sports
Complex.
In a game that threatened to get out of the referee’s control,
Internaxionale was able to withstand Carib’s physical approach with
some clever possessional play to wrap up a playoff spot for the second
year in a row with a game to spare.
In the Sunday game, two teams with an eye on the playoffs themselves
shared 9 goals in a thriller. Juventus FC raced out to a seemingly
impregnable 5-1 lead before Unity FC’s player-coach, former Reggae Boy
Hector Wright and their marksman Romaro Francis threatened to steal a
point with a late 3 goal rally. Time however ran out on Unity, and
Juventus held on to win 5-4, leaving both teams with a good shot at a
playoff spot with 19 and 18 points respectively.

The Soccer Feva Partnership, a joint effort between Florida’s Rush
Promotions Group and Jamaica’s Norbrook Entertainment Group, announced
the hosting of their annual Soccer Feva series – an international
friendly soccer match between two rival countries that have strong
roots in the South Florida community.
In its inaugural year, Soccer Feva has decided to entertain the
strongest of such rivalries in the Caribbean with a game between
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz and Haiti’s Les Grenadiers slated for Saturday,
May 23rd at Lockhart Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The anticipation surrounding the game is already brewing in the camps
of both countries. As Haiti and Jamaica gear up for their Gold Cup
appearances, both teams recognize this as an important tuning
opportunity. Jamaica’s coach, John Barnes, will be taking a final look
at his key players to ensure the best squad for the regions biggest
competition. Additionally, the Haitian team has brought on a new coach
that has assured the most finely tuned Haitian team to take the field
in some time.
