KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s Olympic triple gold medallist Usain Bolt clocked a season's best and world leading 45.54 seconds in winning the men’s 400 metres at the University of West Indies (UWI) Invitational meet at the National Stadium on Saturday night. The effort bettered by 0.81 seconds his previous season's best of 46.35 seconds at the Camperdown Classic the previous weekend, and topped Australian Sean Wroe's 45.70 as the quickest in the world so far this year. Bolt, the 2008 IAAF Male Athlete of Year, is in early season preparation for the 2009 international campaign in which he will target a repeat of his Beijing sprint double triumph at the IAAF World Championship in Berlin, Germany this summer. Sprinters traditionally use over-distance running – like the 400 metres -- ahead of the season for strength work and Bolt’s coach Glen Mills is not surprised his 22 year-old marvel went as fast as he did on Saturday. "It's part of his training, so we expect him to improve every week," Mills told reporters. Bolt covered himself in glory and Olympic stardom in Beijing last summer when he won the 100 and 200-metre gold medals and also helped propel Jamaica to a victory in the sprint relay, all in world record times. In Beijing, he captured the 100 metres in 9.69 seconds, the 200 in 19.30 and joined Asafa Powell, Nesta Carter and Michael Frater in landing the 4X100-metre relay in 37.10 seconds. Also winning at Saturday’s UWI meet was three-time World Junior Championship medallist Yohan Blake over 200 metres. Blake, who won sprint relay gold and 100-metre bronze at the 2006 World Juniors, clocked 20.60 second to beat Winston Barnes (21.04) and Xavier Brown (21.13).
