Lauderhill Strikers debut in Tampa PDF Print E-mail

Miami Surf A will look to defend their titlTrini_Day_1A_034webe when the Annual Tampa Bay Grasshoppers Spring Tournament gets underway this weekend March 6 and 7, at Belmont Park in Clearwater Florida.

This year’s tournament has attracted teams from across the state including the highly touted newcomers Lauderhill Strikers, who will be looking to make their mark.

The tournament, which will mark the first Florida Field Hockey League tournament of the year, will feature eight teams, namely, defending champions Miami Surf A, University of Miami Hurricanes, MiaCuba, Miami Surf B, Lauderhill Strikers, Tampa Bay North, South and East.

The contest is expected to provide some exciting and competitive hockey. Miami Surf A, which is bolstered by a number of new players, is expected to meet some fierce competition from MiaCuba who is known for their high level play.

Lauderhill Strikers, a team comprised of a number of experience players, will also be looking to unseat the defending champions in their debut.

Tampa Bay, last year’s finalist, will be playing at home and cannot be overlooked as they will try to keep the hardware in Tampa.

Jamaican Williams creates NCAA history PDF Print E-mail
kimberly_williams_fsuDefending NCAA Indoor and Outdoor champion in both long and triple jumps, Jamaican Kimberly Williams of Florida State University dominated the competition in the triple jump last weekend at the Tyson Invitational indoor meet producing the third farthest jump in college history.

With a personal best 14.17m (46ft-6in) the 21-year-old former Vere Technical student earned the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) female performer of the week ending February 14.

"Kimberly's performance at the Tyson meet was phenomenal," FSU head coach Bob Braman said on the Seminoles website. "Recording the third best jump in (NCAA) history says it all. She's not just the best track and field athlete in the ACC, but the entire country," he added.

Haiti’s football gets boost PDF Print E-mail

Haiti’s distressed football fraternity has received a much needed boost with the announcement that football’s world governing body, FIFA, plans to inject another US$3 million into reconstruction efforts.

Following a detailed report from powerful vice-president Jack Warner who toured the earthquake ravished country last weekend, FIFA’s finance committee announced the additional financial support in the form of the establishment of a Special Projects Fund.

The Haiti Football Federation headquarters were destroyed during the 7.0 magnitude quake which wrecked buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince and resulted in over 200 000 deaths.

Unity FC continues to dominate PDF Print E-mail
The 2010 Caribbean American Soccer Association (CASA) Super League continued at the Lauderhill Sports Complex, last Saturday with a double header. In the feature game of the night, last year’s Champions Unity FC came up against two-time Champions Western FC. In what has always been one of the biggest games on the league’s fixture. And even though it was windy and cold, the fans came out in droves and they were not disappointed, as the two teams played a very competitive game.
