Who will win the Vince Lombardi Trophy? PDF Print E-mail

eli-manningThe question will be answered come Sunday, February 5, when the New York Giants take on the New England Patriots at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, starting at 6:25 p.m. One team will crown themselves champions at the end and shall have the honor of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The championship trophy, up until 1970 was called the "World Championship Game Trophy." The name was changed in 1970 to honor the former and legendary head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, who captured five NFL championships during his nine years at Green Bay. Vince died the year the Super Bowl Trophy first donned his name.

The Patriots come to the final as favorites, despite losing to the Giants during the regular season. The Giants will want to prove that the victory they achieved this season was no fluke, and neither was their Super Bowl victory four years ago.

However, perhaps the biggest talking point for this year's Super Bowl is that many pundits think that if Patriots Tom-Bradyquarterback (QB) Tom Brady wins his fourth Super Bowl title, then this achievement would decide once and for all who the greatest QB of this era is. Ironically, Super Bowl XLVI will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana, the home town of QB Peyton Manning, who many believe is the best QB of this era and who's younger brother Eli is the QB for the Giants. Eli himself would enhance his status and have his name tossed into this discussion if he leads the Giants to his second upset Super Bowl victory. He would emerge from the shadow of his bigger brother and, with all things being equal, will be considered more successful than his brother, who has only captured one Super Bowl title.

This will however not be a factor in deciding this year's Super Bowl. Once again, the winner will be decided based on which team can stop or limit their opponent's passing game. It will be all about defense. I don't visualize a high scoring game. The team that puts 20 points on the board can possibly come out victorious. My prediction is that the New York Giants will win 20-17.
