Usain Bolt_16082009_BerlinFor the second year, Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell Brown sprinted away with the RJR Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman award for their excellent achievements and outstanding performance for 2011. The ceremony was held on Friday January 20, 2012 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica.

Veronica Campbell Brown, the 2011 World Athletic Championship women's 200 meters gold medalist and women's 100 meters and 4x100 meters relay silver medalist, overcame the challenge of ICC cricketer of the year Stefanie Taylor for the sportswoman title.

In her acceptance speech she said, "I am honored, there are so many great female athletes here who all competed very well in 2011 and I am privileged that I was given this award."

This was Veronica's fifth sportswoman award. She also won the female track and field athlete of the year.

Usain Bolt, the 2011 World Athletic Championship men's 200 meters and 4x100 meters gold medalist won ahead of team mate and friend Yohan Blake.

Usain said about finishing ahead of his friend, "I am surprised, I think it was always a 50-50 chance because Yohan had a great year, so I was slightly surprised, but I am happy and I will continue working hard."

It was expressed in a previous article that the powers that be were trying to divide these two friends and rivals, and it was good to hear Bolt respond to this in his acceptance speech.

"There were a lot of things stirring up in the media, so I thought I would take the opportunity to clear it up," said Bolt, in front of a packed ballroom and live VeronicaCampbellBrownB20110830RM.jpg 595television audience. "It's good to have rivalries, but when you try to break up a friendship, that is the wrong way to go."

"The rivalry is always going to be there, because we are two great athletes, but in training, it's all about hard work and outside of that, we are good friends. If I win, Jamaica wins, and if Yohan wins, Jamaica wins, so it's good for the country anyway."

Bolt also captured The Sagicor Iconic Award in recognition of his achievements and the positive influence he has on the youth of the country. He also received a special team award as part of the 4x100 meters world record breaking team.

Fellow track and field athlete Asafa Powell was the surprise winner of the night, capturing the People's Choice Award for his 10.08 seconds win in the 100m at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA)/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships last June. Powell's performance surprisingly received more public votes than Yohan Blake's 19.26 seconds 200m run in Brussels.
