The other nominees for the top Female Athlete award are the favorite Sally Pearson of Australia, who became the fourth fastest performer ever in the 100m hurdles when she ran 12.28 seconds to win in Daegu, Maria Abakumova of Russia, shot put champion Valerie Adams of New Zealand, Tatyana Chernova of Russia, Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya, Anna Chicherova of Russia, 400m hurdles world champion Lashinda Demus of the USA, USA's 100m world champion Carmelita Jeter and Botswana's 400m world champion Amantle Montsho. Following outstanding performances at the recent World Championship, Jamaica's Yohan Blake, the 100m world champion and fellow countryman Usain Bolt, the 200m world champion, along with Grenada's 400m world champion Kirani James, will lead the Caribbean challenge for Male Athlete of the Year. Both Blake and Bolt were also a part of Jamaica's world record breaking 4X 100m relay team at the World Championship.

Four Caribbean athletes will be vying for this year's IAAF Male and female Athlete of the Year. Veronica Campbell Brown of Jamaica is the lone Caribbean athlete nominated for Female Athlete of the Year award and will be competing against nine other nominees. Veronica captured the gold in the Women's 200m and earned a silver medal in the 100m at the recent IAAF World Athletic Championship.
