Top Jamaican track stars have confirmed their place for the upcoming Jamaica International Track and Field meet on May 5, at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.
Usain Bolt will run his first 100 meters race for the year, having opened his season recently with the anchor lap for his Racers Track Club team at the UTech Track and Field Classics, where they earned a world leading 37.82 seconds record for the 4x100 meters race.
Fellow Racers teammate, world 100 meters champion Yohan Blake is down to compete in the 200 meters event and will be up against former 100 meters world record holder and fellow country man Asafa Powell.
Powell will also premiere his newly designed Li Ning competition spikes this season, featuring two diamonds to represent his brothers who passed away.
"Everything I do this year will be in their honor," Powell said. "They supported me all the way from the start, so they are never far from my mind each time I go on the track."
On the women's side, Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will be competing in the 200 meters and will not compete against USA's Carmelita Jeter over the 100 meters. Jeter opened her season recently with a world-leading 22.31 seconds in the 200 meters at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium.
Other top athletes who are confirmed to compete are Jamaican world indoor 400 meters champion Sanya Richard-Ross, American long jump world indoor champion Brittney Reese, and Jamaican Olympic 400 meters hurdles champion Melaine Walker, who will make her first appearance for the season. |

Jamaican sprinters Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt were off and running as they both began their 2012 athletic season in good form at the recent fifth staging of the University of Technology (UTech) Track and Field Classics at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.
Running for Racers Track Club in rainy conditions, they teamed up with Mario Forsythe and Kimmari Roach to overcome the challenge of their rivals, the MVP Track Club quartet of Dwain Chambers, Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Asafa Powell. Blake ran a brilliant second leg on the back stretch and Bolt got the baton about two strides ahead of Asafa Powell on the anchor leg. Bolt managed to pull away, winning in a year leading time of 38.72 seconds.
"It was my first run and I am happy I got through, it was a bit chilly with some rain, but this is what we are used to in Europe so it is ok," said Bolt, who added that he always looks forward to the clashes between MVP and Racers. This performance also puts to rest any doubt track fans may have about Usain Bolt's fitness.
Blake also returned to win the men's 100 meters with a year leading 9.90 seconds.
"I could have pushed some more towards the end and gone faster, but Coach (Glen Mills) told me to take it easy today and that's what I did," he said to reporters.
