Who will win the Vince Lombardi Trophy? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 February 2012 11:52

eli-manningThe question will be answered come Sunday, February 5, when the New York Giants take on the New England Patriots at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, starting at 6:25 p.m. One team will crown themselves champions at the end and shall have the honor of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The championship trophy, up until 1970 was called the "World Championship Game Trophy." The name was changed in 1970 to honor the former and legendary head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, who captured five NFL championships during his nine years at Green Bay. Vince died the year the Super Bowl Trophy first donned his name.

The Patriots come to the final as favorites, despite losing to the Giants during the regular season. The Giants will want to prove that the victory they achieved this season was no fluke, and neither was their Super Bowl victory four years ago.

Heat on 5-game win streak PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 February 2012 11:27

wade and_jamesThe 16 and 5 Heat continue to surge up the Eastern Conference division rankings, moving from fifth position last week to the number two spot this week. Following last week's victory over Cleveland, the Heat defeated the Detroit Pistons 101-98 last Thursday, then had home victories over the New York Knicks 99-89, Chicago Bulls 97-93 and New Orleans Hornets 109-95.

Miami's biggest game for the season took place last Sunday against the Eastern Conference division leaders the Chicago Bulls. The Heat overcame a late surge by the Bulls to eke out a 97-93 home victory. The team continues to struggle at the end of close games against quality opponents who employ the zone defense. Also the involvement of players outside The Big Three becomes limited and seemly by design.

The Heat during the closing minutes was forced into three critical mistakes against the zone: one, a turnover by Dwyane Wade and two poor decisions by Lebron James in holding on to the ball and putting up two poor free throw attempts. These three mistakes could have easily cost the Heat the game. However, with Derrick Rose also missing two free throws, Miami managed to see ahead. Wade continued to struggle offensively against good opponents and ended the game with 15 points.

Tennis

Australian Open/ Men's final

DjokovicNovak Djokovic prevails

In what can easily be described as one of the greatest tennis matches of all time, 24 year-old and world number one, Novak Djokovic, defeated arch rival and former world number one ranked Rafael Nadal, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5/7), 7-5 to capture the Australian Open Men's title at the Rod Lever Arena in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday, January 30.

In an epic battle that lasted five hours and 53 minutes, the longest grand slam final ever, saw both champions playing unbelievable tennis. But when it ended, Novak joined Laver, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Nadal as the only men who have won three consecutive majors since the Open Era, when in 1968 tennis professionals were allowed to compete in grand slams. Novak has defeated Nadal in three grand slams. Novak will attempt to win and hold all four grand slam titles at the same time when he seeks to capture the French Open in May 2012.

eli-manningIt will be a repeat of Super Bowl XLII as once again the New York Giants will come up against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 5, 2012 at 6:25 p.m.

Both teams earned the right by capturing their divisional titles last Sunday, January 22. The Giants outlasted the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to take the National Football Conference (NFC) title 20-17, while the Patriots held on to beat the Baltimore Ravens and take the American Football Conference (AFC) title 23-20.

If the divisional finals were anything to go by, then Super Bowl XLVI should be worth watching. The divisional finals provided fans with an opportunity to see four great teams, all well coached, going head to head. The battles were fierce, as superstars became regular players and teamwork shone bright. Defense was the order of the day and the will to succeed was clearly on display for all to see.
