SpiritThe promise of a cheap airline ticket may send travelers running to Spirit Airlines, but its new $45 fee for a carry-on may send them flying with another carrier.

Spirit on Monday became the first U.S. airline to charge passengers for carry-on luggage that is stored in overhead bins.

The Miramar-based discount carrier will now tack on an extra $45 for each carry-on bag to be paid at the boarding gates or a fee of $30 if it is paid in advance.

However, items such as briefcase and purses will not cost passengers, as long as they can fit under the seats.

The news has infuriated passengers, as in recent years airlines have been adding on seemingly endless charges and fees.

According to Jennifer Williams, a health care worker, “Just for that reason, I will not take Spirit Airlines.” She said everyone should boycott the carrier, since supporting it will only encourage other airlines to follow suit.

Since 2008, most airlines have been charging at least $20 for the first checked luggage and $30 for the second. The soon to be divested Air Jamaica was one of the last airlines to employ a charge for checked luggage.

Sandy Mullings, a communications director who travels to the Caribbean often, says she is fed up with these extras that airlines add to jack up costs. She said it would be easier to include them in the ticket price to give travelers a clear idea of what they are paying for. “This idea of itemizing prices puts a damper on the already difficult process of airline traveling.”

But Spirit says the new charge is necessary to lower fares to benefit its Fare Club members and is a way to ensure that customers are paying only for what they use, as opposed to “subsidizing the choices of others.”

The airline maintains that the idea is for people lessen the load. “Bring less, pay less. It’s simple,” Spirit chief operating officer Ken McKenzie said in a statement.

The new fee becomes effective for travel on August 1.
