A federal report of high unemployment among teens is something that most teens in South Florida or parents with teenage children can easily attest to.
Last week a report from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that the incidence of unemployment was significantly higher among teens than adults. According to the report, the national jobless rate for teens in May was 26.8 percent compared to 23.6 percent in May, 2009. This rate compares to that of 9.4 percent for adult men over 20, and 7.8 percent for adult women.

If an upside can be identified from the damaging deepwater oil spill on the economy of the Pensacola Beach region of North Florida, it is that it has provided employment opportunities for thousands of previously unemployed people.
This has given new meaning to the cliché, “One man’s pain is another man’s gain.” On one hand, the disaster has been a severe financial setback to some Panhandle residents and business people, but the calamity is also providing unexpected jobs for others.

Bill McCollum
Within days after President Obama signed the new health care law earlier this year, Florida’s Attorney General Bill McCollum led 19 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit against the federal government, claiming the law, specifically the aspect that makes obtaining healthcare coverage mandatory, was unconstitutional.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss the constitutional challenge by McCollum and the other state attorneys. However, McCollum does not intend to back away from the lawsuit.

Florida homeowners in danger of foreclosure should be getting some relief soon, as Florida’s State Housing Finance Agencies got the go ahead on Wednesday to begin using the $418 million allotted to the state in the “Hardest Hit Fund.”
The money is a portion of the $1.5 billion foreclosure-prevention funding under plans approved by the Obama Administration for Florida, Arizona, California and Nevada, to support innovative local initiatives to help struggling homeowners in those states, as part of the first round of funding available under this new program.
Florida will offer mortgage payment assistance to the unemployed and under-employed while they seek re-employment.
