Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., says it will be shutting the doors to 30 of its underperforming stores nationwide, four of which are in Broward County.

The company based in Jacksonville, on Wednesday made the announcement, citing the struggling economy. Winn-Dixie, which operates 514 stores across the country, on Tuesday, said it was cutting some 120 jobs in both corporate and field support.

According to CEO Peter Lynch, the stores “can't operate efficiently or profitably” in the current economic climate.

“We just don't see a lot of good things down the road,” he said. “These steps are being taken to position the company for another challenging year.”

Winn-Dixie has struggled in the past to maintain its stores and have been working on a strategy to become more competitive in the industry. However, Lynch said job cuts and the closure of the stores have nothing to do Winn-Dixie’s strategy, which includes remodeling some 50 percent of its stores. The stores to close have not been remodeled.

Lynch said their strategy is working and the economy is simply a bump in the road.

The Broward stores set to close are Deerfield Beach, 1101 S. Military Trail; Fort Lauderdale, 2420 N. Federal Hwy; Pembroke Pines, 15859 Pines Blvd. and Plantation, 901 N. Nob Hill Rd.
