mahatmaˍgandhi.jpgAn auction to sell Mahatma Gandhi's belongings in New York has been called off, as James Otis, the owner of the items said it was no longer necessary.

Otis came to the decision, following rigorous negotiations between himself and the Indian government, to take Mahatma's glasses, slippers and some utensils off the selling block.

Gandhi's relics were to be auction Thursday evening.

India had earlier rejected Otis’s proposal to call of the auction and sell them to the Indian Government at list price if the government agrees to substantially increase its health budget over the next 10 years and to sponsor a 78-nation non-violence tour with Gandhi’s exhibits.

The final deal reached between the two, was unclear up to press time, but wealthy NRIs in New York showed interest in purchasing the items on India’s behalf as a last resort.
