oprahAmerican talk show icon Oprah Winfrey and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan recently visited Haiti to witness firsthand the continued situation in that nation since the earthquake of January 2010.

Oprah Winfrey, who arrived in the Haitian Capital Port-au-Prince on Sunday, toured one of the tent camps provided for homeless earthquake victims. According to an Associated Press report she, accompanied by American actor Sean Penn and under tight security, toured the camp walking along the tents and speaking with camp occupiers.

Penn has been providing relief and other services to earthquake survivors including creating the J/P HRO aid group, which provides assistance to thousands of camp occupants. According to the report, Penn and his work in Haiti is to be featured on Winfrey's new cable network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

Winfrey told reporters the visit was part of her plan to travel the world "to see interesting and fascinating cases of profound examples of what can be done to make a difference." Penn said he welcomed the exposure that the feature on OWN presents, as it would be a help to Haiti. Winfrey will also feature Caribbean Crafts, a successful artisanal goods producer she toured during the trip, on the program.

The former talk show host also met for dinner with Haitian President Michel Martelly, who has been reported as saying he wanted to invite her to be a goodwill ambassador for the country. No formal role for Winfrey however has been confirmed by the President's office or by Winfrey's representation.

Some Haitians in South Florida said they would be disappointed if Oprah did not signal that she will be making "a fundamental" contribution to Haiti to assist in its development.

A Haitian financial planner said he hopes that with Winfrey's massive financial resources that she indicates she would build a school to educate Haitian children, "like she did for young girls in South Africa," or build a medical clinic somewhere in the country.

Farrakhan who also arrived on Sunday for a five-day visit told reporters on his arrival that he plans to explore ways his organization can help Haiti rebuild from the devastating earthquake. He is also expected to meet with Martelly and other Haitian government public and private sector leaders.
