wyclef JeanInternational entertainer and former Haitian presidential aspirant, Wyclef Jean is again fending off allegations of fraud against his charity organization, Yele Haiti, according to a recent New York Post report.

The report said the organizers of Yele Haiti misused funds raised for victims of the January 2010 earthquake. It is alleged that less than a third of the US$16 million raised for earthquake relief was used for emergency efforts and that US$1 million was reportedly paid to Amisphere Farm Labor Inc. that failed to complete the necessary paperwork to be incorporated in Florida.

In a statement responding to the allegations, Jean said the claims were "misleading, deceptive and incomplete," adding that, "The percentage of funds used is consistent with NGOs and not- for-profits operating in Haiti at the time."

Responding to the allegations regarding Amisphere Farm Labor, Jean said the NY Post failed to highlight that the organization was responsible for preparing and delivering close to 100,000 meals in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Around the time of the January 2010 earthquake, Jean denied other allegations including one that he was using money raised by Yele Haiti to fund projects like his production company, recording studio and a live performance for his personal gain.

He noted he was no longer a part of Yele's active leadership, acknowledging the charity had made mistakes in the past. "The new and good news is that Yele under new leadership, despite efforts to undermine its credibility and effectiveness, it continues its mission to serve people in need."

A Haitian entertainer in a largely Haitian community in Pompano Beach said he had contributed "heavily" to the Yele fundraising drive after the earthquake, and closely followed the post-earthquake work done by the organization.

"I have no doubt that Wyclef and Yele served the victims of the earthquake well, and I also have no doubts that the this news from the New York paper is being made by people and organizations that have been seeking to smear Wyclef's image for a long time."
