2010_logo_largeWith very little to celebrate and much work needed to be done before a hurricane strikes, Haitians are finding joy in their favorite sport – Soccer (football).

Surely, while Haitians are proud that their son of the soil, Jozy Altidore, an integral player on team USA, on Tuesday, it was all about Brazil as they hyped on ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’.

Reports out of Haiti are that the Brazilian green and yellow were the colors of choice on the streets of Port-au-Prince, as people took a break from their reality to soak up the euphoria of the World Cup.

Brazil, the most storied team in the World Cup, is the team that Haiti, among many other Caribbean nations, carries. Argentina falls to second place, but unlike the two rivaling teams, Haitians unite despite their preference.

It could very well have been the finals on Tuesday, judging by the level of excitement from the nation – where the World Cup soundtracks were being blasted on speakers and girls sported yellow and green on their faces and skillfully manicured nails.

The main stadium in Port-au-Prince, where many slept in the aftermath of the devastating January 12 earthquake, now shows soccer matches on giant screens for the soccer hungry crowds – bringing together masses of people who were denied their carnival in the wake of the quake.

But while, the crisis in Haiti, for the moment, may be lost on many soccer fans, for the 1.5 million people still homeless after the earthquake, it is still a stark reality.
