"Brushing"

toothbrushYou have been brushing your teeth nearly all of your life. However, are you really brushing properly? The importance of properly brushing teeth is often overlooked, but it's an extremely important part of keeping your gums and teeth healthy. While brushing teeth isn't rocket science, it requires a conscious effort to make sure it is done correctly and for maximum effectiveness.

The most common pitfall that prevents people from brushing properly is that they do not brush long enough. Most dentists recommend brushing for two to three minutes, spending approximately 30 seconds per "quadrant" of your mouth. Brushing teeth properly means taking the time to reach every tooth, as well as every surface of every tooth. Don't forget to brush your tongue! The tongue harbors a multitude of bacteria, particularly those that contribute to bad breath.

Your dentist will recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice per day, or after every meal. Please remember to floss as well as rinse with an antiseptic rinse.

Your dentist will recommend a soft bristle toothbrush. These bristles are effective in removing plaque, food debris, and stains, while avoiding harm to your gums and tooth enamel. You should replace your toothbrush when it begins to show wear, or every three months, whichever comes first. A worn toothbrush can damage gum tissue.

Additionally, it is imperative to schedule regular appointments with your dentist for professional cleanings at least every six months.
