Buju Banton fans and friends are stepping up their bid to free the jailed star by writing an official letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. According to the blog www.thisisbujubanton.wordpress.com, the letter was “to bring even more attention to the flimsy Federal charges being wielded against the international reggae music icon.”

It said the letter writing campaign was to make the government “aware that the public is monitoring this case closely.”

The letter states: “I am writing to ask for your intervention with respect to a grave injustice against Grammy-nominated reggae music icon Buju Banton (legal name Mark Anthony Myrie). The incarceration of this legendary musician without bail is unconscionable.”

The letter contends that Buju, who is currently in the Pinellas County Jail in Clearwater, Florida awaiting trial on drug conspiracy charges, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and that the professional informant in his case “is a convicted drug trafficker from Colombia. This convicted felon has been granted legal immigration status and to date has earned over three million American dollars (tax-free) for serving as an informant to various U.S. government agencies. Taxpayer dollars certainly could be spent more effectively than on trying to entrap individuals who have no previous criminal record and have never been involved with drugs in any manner.”

It calls for bail for Buju, whom the letter asserts “meets all of the requirements for bail.”

It also highlighted the artiste’s musical work, which it describes as “uplifting, positive music comparable to the music of Bob Marley.”

The blog encourages fans to copy said letter or create their own to be sent to the Attorney General.
