It was a day of color and culture at the Vincent Torres Park in Lauderdale Lakes for the 16th annual staging of Unifest.

This year the event paid special attention to Haiti, which was devastated by a massive earthquake on January 12, with a food and fundraising drive to assist the country as it recovers.

It was indeed an incredible time for Haitians, who showed up in their numbers to celebrate as their fellow Caribbean neighbors at this melting pot that was Unifest.

Unifest, as it has done in recent years, managed to bring together a wide cross section of Caribbean and other nationals to celebrate a common theme and enjoy the different cultural features each nation has to offer.

From the costumed women of Panama and the Carnival revelers of Trinidad and Tobago to the stilt walkers of the Virgin Islands, the rich Caribbean culture was on display.

Kids had multiple opportunities to enjoy themselves with face painting and other activities, plus show their solidarity as flag bearers for the parade of flags event.

Of course, the onstage performances which included artistes like L’il Base, who performed with his little brother; Zewdy, Mama Lulu, Haitian poet Enoche Fragelus; Hal Anthony, Tinga Stewart and Wayne Wonder, were what the crowds clamored for and which brought an end to a colorful and fantastic cultural extravaganza.
