Entertainment in 2009 was wild and crazy! PDF Print E-mail

mavado_feat01The year in entertainment was a wild and crazy one, but we also had some significant losses. To begin, it was crazy hype with Mavado's ‘So Special' video hitting MTV, Serani's ‘No Games' getting mad airplay internationally and Heath Ledger posthumously winning an Oscar for his remarkable performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

But February the entertainment industry was shocked and Chris Brown's image was marred by the beating he gave to former girlfriend, Rihanna. The battered star was out of sight for a moment, but jumped back in the spotlight, and by yearend was declaring that she is "so hard".

Just a couple months later, in April, Miss North Carolina, Carrie Prejean, who personifies ‘duh', taught us all about ‘opposite marriage' and began a controversy that carried throughout the year. It involved lawsuits, sex tapes and boob jobs and Prejean calling Larry King "inappropriate".

June 12 signaled the end of analog TV. Get with it people!

June 25 marked the end of an era in entertainment with the loss of the consummate entertainer and master of controversy Michael Jackson. It sent shock waves around the world, especially since the artiste was attempting a comeback with a sold out tour - This Is It - ironically. Farah Fawcett, one of the original Charlie's Angels also died on June 25.

Lil Wayne had a good year. He was on everybody's records and in everybody's ipod. He ended the year on a high with ‘Transform You', but will be serving time come February on a taylor-swiftgun charge.

In August, American Idol's crazy host Paula Abdul was off idol and Whitney Houston, who had arguably one of the greatest vocals, released a new album. It was a good effort, but lacked the voice we know and love.

Patrick Swayze of Dirty Dancing fame succumbed to cancer in September and Brad Pitt starred in one of the best movies of the year, Inglourious Basterds.

It was also in September that cocky rapper Kanye West had another case of, according to president Obama, being a "jackass" when he stormed the stage where Taylor Swift was accepting an award and declared that Beyonce was more deserving. I wonder if 2010 will change Kanye.

Oprah, on November 20, told her audience she has decided to end her show in 2011. The queen of talk, who has garnered unparalleled popularity, may be pursuing another vocation. But the big question is: What will people do on weekdays at 4pm?

buju_bantonThe wee hours of the morning on November 27 began what no one expected to be the taking down of one of the world's biggest sport stars - golfer Tiger Woods. What began as a simple accident, spiraled out of control into a tale of infidelity, texting, sexting and voicemails with numerous women, all claiming to have had a little of Tiger. It dominated the airwaves through most of December and the once clean-cut sports star went into rehab.

Also on November 20, Sean Paul and Shaggy became the first reggae acts to perform on a reggae show at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood!

On December 8, feuding artistes Mavado and Vybz Kartel of Gully and Gaza fame met with Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding to quell a feud that was spilling over into society at an alarming rate, allegedly fueling gang warfare. The two met, shook hands and sang Kumbaya - or maybe they should have.

On December 10, Buju Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie was arrested on drug conspiracy charges in Miami. Buju is still behind bars, but has hired high profile attorney, David Oscar Markus, to defend him.

There's tons more that could be said, but to sum it up, the year, even with the recession had entertainment highs and lows, losses and gains... let's see how it all plays out for 2010!
