Diplomats must get involved Sir, I must commend your writer Professor David Rowe for his comments encouraging the Jamaican Consul General to take steps to get involved with the Broward Sheriff Office, and see what is happening with Caribbean youth when they are arrested and are involved in the Broward court system. This should apply to the Miami-Dade court system as well. Too many times black youth from the Caribbean are treated without any respect by law enforcement officers in all of Florida, but especially in Broward and Miami-Dade. Not only the Jamaican consular general, but all those diplomats who represent the Caribbean countries here in Florida, must make sure that they understand the working of the system, make themselves known to law enforcement and be better able to represent the many youth who get caught up in the system. Too many dying Dear Sir: I applaud your effort to bring to the fore this scourge of the killing of children in our community. It seems to be a problem not only here, but in our Caribbean communities. I recently read with disgust, some incidents that took place in Trinidad and Jamaica which is a shame and disgrace. Our children should be the future and if we blight and tarnish the future how will they survive to carry on our legacy and make the world a better place? I actually think that amnesty international who is so overly concerned with the gay bashing and such other matters should put some of their focus on the criminal activities which target our youth. The raping and murdering of our children have become common place and society must not rest until this is stemmed. I refuse to believe that these perpetrators should go unpunished. In fact, a stiffening of the penalties for crimes against minors would be a good thing and that might deter them from these participating in these activities. Sir, keep up the good work and continue to keep us informed. Melissa Turner, Lauderhill |
