Led by an impressive knock by skipper Mark Johnson, 62 runs not out, aided by wicket-keeper batsman Shane Ford 40, Jamaica recorded a remarkable victory over Guyana to capture the 4th Annual Mayor’s International Cricket Cup last Saturday, at the Lauderhill Sports Complex in front of jubilant fans. The final was a repeat of last year’s contest except that due to poor weather there were three consecutive rain outs forcing a share of the title. However, this year the Jamaicans made it undisputed, defeating the Guyanese in fine style. Having won the toss they elected to field, holding Guyana, who lost six wickets, to a mere 144 runs off their allotted 20 overs. Moin Mohamed scored 37 runs, not out, 2 sixes & 2 fours, Hasratali Amin 21 runs, with 4 fours along with Masood Mohamed and Fisul Sherif, who both made 20, were the top scorers for the losers Guyana’s six wickets fell to Mark Johnson, two for 28 runs in 3 overs, Kevin Wedderburn, two for 37 in 4 overs, and Neville Dawkins along with Glen Anglin, both took 1 wicket each. In their turn at the crease, Johnson who had 2 sixes and 7 fours to score his 62 , coupled with Ford whose knock included a six and 3 fours before he was caught bowled by Riad Mohamed (1 for 28 off 3.3 overs) made it look easy. Jamaica romped to 145 runs for the loss of two wickets en route to their victory utilizing 16.3 of their allotted 20 overs. Ford was named man of the match for his outstanding performance in the field and at the wicket. In other presentations teams received a participation trophy and an outstanding team player from each team also received a trophy for their excellent play leading up to the Semi-Finals. Mandeep Dhillion from the India team received 4 plaques for outstanding Batsman, Bowler, jost Wickets Taken and jost Runs Made. |
