What about the Black men? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 29 April 2006

Dear Sir:

I read your article “Caribbean American women run things” CNWeekly News vol3.no14. After reading this article, I was a little concerned, confused and worried that so many of these articles seem to focus on what can be perceived to be negatively affect black men in general.

Why are we so eager, oftentimes unintentionally, to jump on the “black men bashing” bandwagon? The American political and justice system is already filled with purposefully orchestrated strategies designed to achieve the goal of denigrating the black man, why add to it?

I expect that a Caribbean American Newspaper would seek to be more forwarding looking and solution oriented than some of the other newspaper with a race based agenda. For example, we could do a more in depth investigative research to discover the real reasons why black men are disproportionately in prison or unemployed. We must also focus on coping strategies that families could employ to reconcile the imbalance of the sexes.

My point is that black men are in this dilemma for a reason. The Black Caribbean media and educated masses need to know what the real reasons are. We need to use the public forum we have to educate people on the facts. We need to all work very hard on finding and recommending solutions. The race will become extinct if we continue to remain in ignorance. We have to begin somewhere. Why not begin with the black men. Next it will be the black women.

If space allowed, I could talk about the increased proportion of black women in prison, or black women with AIDS. So who is running things then?
