Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh enjoyed a bumper day at Gulfstream Park last Saturday, landing four races on the card. Maragh, the 21-year-old son of retired jockey - now trainer - Collin Maragh, swept the second through fourth races and also the eighth on the 10-race card to jump into the top-10 list of riders at the track. He now has 27 wins to be 10th in the standings, which has John Velasquez (86) and Cornelio Velasquez (82) in a tight battle for championship honours. Another Jamaican rider, Shaun Bridgmohan, is eighth on 33 wins. In the US$22,000 second race over a mile, Maragh logged a narrow front-running win aboard the 2-to-1 favourite Henry JC, scoring by three-quarters of a length in one minute 34.09 seconds. His win in the US$12,000 third race over six-furlongs was also tough, a come-from-behind effort after stumbling at the start with the 8-5 favourite Somethingdangerous. The eight-year-old gelding and jockey Maragh were resolute in the finish to win by a neck in 1:10.71. In the US$17,000 fourth race over six furlongs, Maragh used the three-year-old filly Faithwillbrewarded to win by a length as the 4-5 favourite, and the confident young rider completed his four-timer with a smooth victory astride the 4-1 shot Rockandahardplace in the eighth race. The three-year-old colt was slow at the start of the US$32,000 six-furlong sprint, but Maragh was rallied him with a rail run in the home stretch and won by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:11.28. |
