Passengers watched in horror as the amorous couple attacked cabin crew after being told to return to their seats, the paper reported, saying they shouted abuse and spat as they grappled with the staff who forced them back into their business class seats.

The paper said that although the two were eventually restrained with plastic handcuffs, the pilot decided to divert the 777 aircraft to Bermuda.

It said the incident began when the couple started drinking heavily on the 10-hour flight from London's Gatwick Airport to Jamaica on Monday.

"They joined the so-called 'mile-high club' in one of the toilets, but after their passion was overheard by flight staff they were ordered out and went berserk," the paper reported.

The two, who had booked a two-week holiday, were held by police here on Wednesday and put on a flight back to Gatwick where they were arrested.

The Royal Gazette said they face the possibility of being charged with air rage and could end up facing a total bill of around US$40,000, including the US$34,000 bill for forcing the captain to divert the plane.
