Chris Brown was the star of show at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, walking away with three top trophies – one more than Alicia Keys who was nominated for five awards.
The R&B/Pop heart throb picked up the male soul/R&B artist, male pop/rock artist honors and the real big one, artist of the year.
Keys As I Am album received nods in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.
As one of the hottest artists in the business now, Rihanna certainly would have to be walking away with some top honors as well. She copped two awards as best female in the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories. Rihanna beat out favorites, Keys and Mary J. Blige for the soul/R&B award.
Temper tantrum throwing Kanye West snagged a couple awards this time around. But, there were no tantrums for West, who got the male rap/hip-hop artist award that he was annoyed about not getting last year. He also picked up the rap/hip-hop album for his work on Graduation.
West offered the rap/hip-hop artist award to fellow rapper Lil’ Wayne and said it was up to them to push each other to do better. The artist said, "I wake up every morning thinking, 'What stereotypes do I wanna break?'" Adding that "It's up to artists to push one another. We'll push each other to be the new Beatles, the new Hendrix…I wanna be Elvis." Did he break the temper tantrum stereotype??? We’ll see.
Mariah Carey received an honorary trophy for having the most Number One hits (beating Elvis Presley’s record). Annie Lennox also received an honorary award.
Linkin Park was named the favorite alternative rock artist and Daughtry snagged the favorite pop or rock music band award.
Performers for the night included Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna.
