ROSEAU – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has sacked embattled Public Works and Infrastructural Development Minister Ambrose George from his cabinet.
The announcement came in a national radio address here on Tuesday night in which the Prime Minister also revealed several other changes to his 16-member team.
George’s dismissal follows recent allegations of financial impropriety that have been leveled against him.
Although the Prime Minister did not make specific mention of any of the charges made against George, he said it was important to protect Dominica’s reputation abroad.
“The least we can do as a small developing nation is to be mindful of the signals we send in respect to fiscal prudence and adherence to acceptable standards of governance,” he said.
Stressing that the island’s image as a stable, mature and responsible democracy was paramount, Skerrit said “we must remain transparent and accountable in the eyes of the world”.
This is second time in five years that George has been dismissed from a Dominica cabinet. Back in 2003, he was also fired by then Prime Minister Pierre Charles (now deceased) after he became entangled in a scandal, involving convicted money launderer Julian Gireaud.
