It didn’t rain this year. And, I’m sure those there who attended last year’s Jamaican Jerk Festival at Markham Park in Sunrise were all saying halleluiah!

The year’s event, which attracted an estimated 18,000 patrons, was another titillating exhibition and celebration of Jamaican art, craft, food and culture, taking Jamaican nationals home and immersing others into their vibrant lifestyle.

Patrons floated in on the mingling aromas of all things ‘Jerk’ and were taken away by the sheer magnitude and variety of the “Biggest Caribbean Food Festival in the USA”. There was something for everyone, from soccer and netball matches and domino tournaments to celebrity chefs’ cook-off competitions, cultural stages and expanded Kids’ Zone.

Last year’s winner of the Publix Jerk Cook Off competition, Sharon Jefferson retained the top spot winning again the coveted golden Dutch pot over runners up Ainsworth Spence, who took the silver and Morris Smith who received the bronze.

The event culminated with patrons moving to the main stage where they reveled in the musical offerings of artistes and bands such as One Third, Sheila Hilton and Chalice, climaxing with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. The band, in all their glory, paid tribute to Byron Lee, founder and bandleader who died recently, drawing for some of their earliest tunes including one of Lee’s favorites Tiny Winey.
