Grenada's 400-metre star Alleyne Francique's repeat win has allowed Grenada to finish an all-time best eighth at the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Francique, 29, clocked a season's best 45.54 seconds to defeat Botswana's California Molefe (45.75) and become only the second man in history - after American 1987 and 1989 winner Antonio McKay - to score back-to-back wins in the event at the World Indoors. Grenada's previous best on the World Indoors medal list was 13th in Budapest two years ago when Francique's win - their only medal - placed them among the highest finishers on the medal table. The medal list is tabulated with the quality of the medal weighing more heavily than the number of medals won. Russia, as they did in 2004, emerged champions again with eight gold, five silver and five bronze medals, topping the USA (7-4-2), Ethiopia (2-0-0) and Ukraine (2-0-0). Other Caribbean medal winners at the three-day meet that ended Sunday were Cuba, Jamaica and The Bahamas. Cuba placed 14th with one silver and one bronze, while the Jamaicans, who had placed third at the 2001 meet in Lisbon with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, had an uncharacteristically low take of one medal - Kenia Sinclair's 800-metre silver. The Bahamas collected two medals - bronze for 400-metre runners Chris Brown and Christine Amertil - to place 25th. |
