Commuters taking the Metrobus or Metrorail in Miami-Dade will now have to shell out more cash for a ride.

The fare increase which took effect on Tuesday will see passengers paying $2 – 50 cents up from the $1.50 it used to cost to ride the Metrobus or Metrorail train. In addition, Metrorail parking fees have increased to $100, up from the $75 monthly charge. Discounted passes will now cost $50.

With the currently economic climate, people are looking to cut costs in all possible areas, and an increase of any kind (unless it’s a salary increase) is never good news. But the county says the increased fares are on par with the cost of public transit fares in major cities in the nation.
