First generation Florida students with college ambitions may be on their way to getting help with a scholarship program.
Florida International University’s scholarship program is targeting students who would be the first in their family to attend college and the state will match them dollar for dollar in this venture.
Students who enroll in the program are given a chance at tertiary education partly from this scholarship program, called The First Generation Matching Grant Program (FGMG).
The FGMG provides “need-based grants to undergraduate students who are enrolled in state universities and whose parents have not earned baccalaureate degrees,” according to the University’s website.
The funds, however, depend on money raised by FIU and matched by the state. The university is looking to raise $100,000 by November, which would be matched giving them $200,000 for the fund. They currently have $50,000, and will depend on donors for the rest.
