CASTRIES – Many St. Lucians were jolted from their sleep during the early hours of Tuesday morning by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.
The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre confirmed the event occurred east of the island around 2:18 a.m. It said there were also reports that the earthquake was felt in neighboring St. Vincent.
St. Lucia’s National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) said that the quake appeared to have been heaviest in the central and western communities, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The island last felt an earthquake on November 29 last year. The quake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, caused structural damage to a number of buildings in the capital which have since been abandoned.
