ST GEORGE’S – Former Grenada prime minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell has been denied a United States visa, according to a notice posted on the official website of the Grenada government.
It said that Mitchell, whose New National Party (NNP) was defeated in the July 8 general elections after 13 years in power, has been issued with a new diplomatic passport, “an entitlement of the office of the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition”.
But the statement on the website said that efforts to secure a United States visa on the new diplomatic passport however did not materialize “as sections of the visa application form, which should have been filled out by the opposition leader, were left blank.
“The United States Embassy, in Bridgetown, Barbados, contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting that Dr. Mitchell provide the additional information required on the application form. However when contacted, Dr. Mitchell requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask the Embassy to return the diplomatic passport to Grenada. As a result the visa was not granted,” the statement said.
