BEIJING, China - New Olympic men’s 100 meters silver medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago has no problem placing second to new Olympic champion and World record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica.
The 21-year-old Bolt obliterated a high-class field that included Thompson to win the 100 dash in a World record 9.69 seconds on Saturday and become the first ever Jamaican gold medalist in the event.
“He is such a phenomenal athlete, and he has been extremely phenomenal since he was a youngster, so it was just a matter of time before we got performances like this out of him,” said Thompson making his first appearance at an Olympics.
“I tip my hat to him. He is such a great athlete. What a stage on which to break the World record – the Olympic Final.”
His time of 9.89 secs was a lifetime best and 0.04 secs faster than his previous best. It was good enough for him to grab second a distance behind Bolt and ahead of Walter Dix of the United States.
“But I am a Championship type of guy. I do no really chase times or World records. What I did, I believe speaks volumes about my ability to rise to the challenge and it feels great to be the Olympic silver medalist behind Usain.”
