Crossing party lines, a top Republican moderate Tuesday threw his support behind presidential candidate Barack Obama, assisting the Illinois Senator as he attempts to win support from both major parties.
Former Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, known for his foreign policy background, was among a group of Conservatives who crossed party lines to support Obama. According to the Obama camp, he also gained the backing of Republican mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jim Whitaker.
Leach justified his position, saying to reporters, "I'm convinced that the national interest demands a new approach to our interaction with the world." He also envisages that many Republicans and independents would be motivated by Obama’s position, but admitted that it was not an easy decision to support a Democratic presidential candidate.
His endorsement coincides with the campaigns plans to launch a new website to encourage Republicans to vote for Obama.
