GEORGETOWN – Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott and Jamaican academic Professor Rex Nettleford will be among prominent Caribbean personalities attending the 10th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) that begins here on August 22.
Artistic Director attached to the CARIFESTA Secretariat Dr. Paloma Mohamed said that Jamaican comedian and actor, Oliver Samuels, will also grace the 10-day event.
She said that St. Lucian-born Walcott, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, will be conducting a Master Class for 12 talented writers from across the region.
Professor Nettleford, considered one of the region's finest dance choreographers and philosophers, will be the main speaker at the Symposium on Caribbean Philosophy and will also facilitate a dance workshop.
He was one of the founders of CARIFESTA in 1972.
For his part, Samuels, dubbed the "King of Comedy", will stage two productions: 'River Bottom' and 'Love Games' and will also hold an open Master Class on August 26 for persons interested in comedy and acting.
Mohammed said that the drama workshops would also be conducted by members of the Trinidad delegation, while the Venezuelans will conduct a session on master drumming.
The Brazilian delegation will conduct a workshop on capoeira, a type of dance using martial art techniques.
Capoeira has a history which includes slavery, oppression and war. It was first born in the Brazilian sugar cane plantations in the early 16th century. Over the years it has adopted many features from the Brazilian and Portuguese culture.
