BARBADOS - The Miami Heat James Jones who has Barbadian connections, believes the island has talented players who can some day make it onto the courts of the game’s biggest league.
Forward Jones who recently signed with the Heat from Portland Trailblazers in the off season also believes the rest of the world is catching up with the Americans in terms of skill level.
After watching the men’s competition at the ongoing Beijing Olympic Games, Jones remarked: “The world is catching up and we are seeing this at the Olympics in China.
“Gone are the days when everyone believes the best players will always come from the United States and Europe. There are some superb players out there from other parts of the world and this is very good to see.”
At the Olympics so far, the American “Dream Team” with James fellow team mate Dwayne Wade, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant heading up the line-up has won all their matches.
Jones, who is married to a Barbadian, has been part of a development camp here for aspiring players.
“In the US team we have very talented players, but talented players are cropping up from all other parts of the world. That’s the idea of camps. The game is expanded at a rapid rate,” he noted.
“The talent here on this island is exceptional and the exposure is what’s needed. The Americans will look the best because they continue to get the exposure but it is clear there is a lot of talent outside of the United States.”
Jones move to Miami, his hometown, where he stands to make US$4 million for the upcoming season.
