Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, is recovering in hospital following a car crash in Mississippi on Sunday night, August 3. The actor was left with a broken arm, broken elbow and damage to his shoulder after the accident which occurred as he was driving his 1997 Nissan Maxima car in Tallahatchie County.
The car went off the shoulder of the road and flipped over "several times", according to one onlooker. Freeman was removed from the car wreck using the 'jaws of life', a hydraulic rescue tool, and airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He had surgery on Tuesday to correct the damage and was reported to be doing well and in good spirits. Freeman’s injuries are expected to take three to four months to heal. The one-car crash also involved a family friend, Demaris Meyer who received minor injuries.
Freeman is involved in divorce proceedings after he and his wife, Myrna Colley-Lee, a costume designer, was separated last year. The couple have been married 24 years and have two children. He has two other children from previous relationships. The reason for the divorce is unknown.
The actor - who won an Academy Award in 2005 for his role in 'Million Dollar Baby' can currently be seen in new Batman movie “the Dark Knight.”
