KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent– Jamaica, on the back of another sparkling performance by inspirational captain Simone Forbes, ran away with the Americas Federation of Netball Association’s title with a comfortable 53-32 victory over Trinidad & Tobago last Friday.
The Sunshine Girls were comfortable winners in what was expected to be a close encounter, but never materialized in front of an appreciative crowd as the Jamaicans led all quarters, 18-7 after the first period, 28-16 at halftime, and 42-25 after three periods.
“We set ourselves the goal of beating all the teams by at least 20 goals so as not to become complacent – we wanted to be convincing winners since we are ranked in the top three in the World,” Forbes in her debut appearance as captain told the CMC Sportswire.
Forbes had rushed from the Caribbean Volleyball Championships in Barbados, where she helped the Jamaica women’s team to third place, to be part of the Sunshine Girls.
She said it was tiring, but she was able to motivate herself to give 100 per cent while making the transition from one sport to the other.
The teams began slowly and in cagey fashion, as they scored on their centre pass for the first six goals.
An infringement by the Soca Girls in the mid-court gave Jamaica an advantage which they gladly seized to go 4-3 and never looked back.
The game, which was physical at times to the point of being violent, produced some brilliant play interspersed with ragged segments.
Forbes, the dynamo in Jamaica’s engine room, was in her element. This was whether it was running the flank, gliding into space in mid court, or making her imperious presence felt in the shooting third as goal attack, or as she did in the final quarter as goal shooter.
A slight knee injury in the second quarter did little to stifle her enthusiasm and skill, as she combined with the dynamic duo of Nadine Bryant and Nichala Gibson to out-pace and out-think T&T.
