Budget cuts affect Broward libraries PDF Print E-mail

Faced with a $7.8 million cut in its budget the Broward County Library has had to take measures to cope with the reduction. According to Bob Cannon, director of the Broward County Library Division steps have been made not to eliminate anything, but rather to reduce everything.

The reduction translated means that the library system, effective August 1, will be reducing its hours by 10 percent. Weekend and peak hours will not be affected.  There will also be reduction in programs that the library offers to the public including tutoring, preschool, after-school, and homework assistance programs.

The library will also be reducing its staff. The projection is that the staff will be reduced by 22 percent, from approximately 990 to 792. Where new libraries are being built, like the one in Miramar, staff will have to be transferred from existing libraries as no new staff will be hired. No existing libraries will, however, be closed.

The new opening schedule for the libraries means that most will lose some of their morning hours opening at 10:00 am on some days instead of 9:00 am, and 12 noon other days instead of 11:00 am. They will close at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on alternative days, and most will be closed on Fridays.
