Golden Girl, Estelle Getty who played octogenarian, Sofia on the NBC sitcom has died.
The actress who suffered from dementia died on Tuesday morning at her Los Angeles home and was surrounded by her family, according to her son Carl Gettleman.
Getty, 84, will be mostly remembered as the sarcastic and spunky Sofia on the classic Golden Girls. Sporting a granny wig and huge glasses, Getty played a character that was 20 years older than herself, earning for her an Emmy and a Golden Globe, as she acted alongside Bea ‘Dorothy’ Arthur, Betty ‘Rose’ White and Rue ‘Blanche’ McClanahan.
One of comedy’s famous faces, Getty was known to deliver the classic one-liners with vim and a straight face on the highly popular comedy.
Arthur said in a statement, "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duo's ever, and I will miss her."
After struggling as an actress for many years, Getty scored the breakthrough role on Golden Girls at age 61, which would become her defining role as an actress. The sitcom ran from 1985 to 1992.
