MIAMI, Florida– Trinidad & Tobago has now won new respect in international power-lifting following Carlos Green’s record-breaking performance at the World Blind Power-lifting Championships.
The visually-impaired athlete showed this country’s might when he lifted his way to three medals.
A Top-10 nominee at the 2007 T&T Sports Personality-of-the-Year awards held earlier this year, Green copped gold in the Open category, silver in the Masters, and bronze in the bench press event.
In the process, he rewrote history breaking the squat record which had been standing for two decades, the overall title unbeaten in 18 years, and the 16-year-old dead-lift mark.
He also went on to create four records of his own in the Open and Masters categories.
“No visually impaired person ever broke so many records,” Green said. “After the first lift I knew I was ready to go down in the (record) books.
“Heroes live on. Legends never die. My purpose is not to be a hero, but a legend. Last year, we wanted to go (to the competition), but could not for various reasons.
“T&T is on the lips of everyone. I’m now feeling the effects of what happened last Saturday. My knees are knocking.”
Sighted power-lifters who competed at the sixth North American Regional Power-lifting Championships held in Oranjestad, Aruba, back in June, were also present, standing proud with their 28-medals from that event.
T&T Sports Minister Gary Hunt said the achievements of T&T’s power-lifting athletes were another example of government commitment to the country’s sportspeople.
