Sunrise attorney Ghenete Wright Muir has officially thrown her hat in the ring for a seat on the Commission of the City of Sunrise.
Filing the relevant paperwork on Monday May 12, Wright Muir, the vice-chair of the City’s Planning and Zoning Advisory Board, began campaigning for the Group D City Commission Seat, currently held by Commissioner Wishner, who has filed to contest the Mayoral Seat for the Sunrise City Commission.
In an interview with the National Weekly, Wright Muir said, “There is a lot of excitement about this campaign and people want to see me win this seat. I have been getting great response and promise of support.”
In fact, Sunrise Commissioner Sheila Alu, also an attorney, told the National Weekly that she was very excited about Wright Muir’s candidacy. “She’s bright, articulate and has a good understanding of the issues facing the City of Sunrise. But most importantly, she will serve residents with honor and dignity.”
Commissioner Alu said as a member of the City’s Planning and Zoning Advisory Board, Wright Muir has served excellently. “She does her homework and she’s always prepared” and she believes Wright Muir is capable of handling the “very difficult” role as a commissioner.
“I support her and I hope that the City of Sunrise will support her also,” the Commissioner said.
Like many other cities in Broward, Sunrise has its share of issues, and according to Wright Muir, she is aware of the challenges the city faces and the “issues that are not being addressed sufficiently. I believe that I have the ability to make improvements,” she said.
Wright Muir, who is of Jamaican descent, said one of the most dire issues affecting Sunrise is the economy, adding that due to the current budget cuts, the city faces new challenges and needs to figure out how to address them in a way that they benefit residents.
As a mother of two sons in the public school system, Wright Muir is also passionate about improving education in Sunrise particularly at the High School level. As such, Wright Muir has already started working with the principal of the city’s sole High School, Piper High, to change the perception of the High School and improve the students’ academic performance.
Along with Lauderhill Commissioner, Dale Holness, who is running for the District 9 Broward County Commission seat, Wright Muir and Principal Enid Valdez are “working together to see what can be done to take piper high school to another level.”
Wright Muir told the National Weekly that “One of the things that we’re going to be doing is bringing the business people and professionals for monthly advisories at the school where they can interact with students and motivate them to strive for excellence.”
She also wants to work to improve and increase after-school programs and activities that will benefit the students and serve to keep them occupied between the time they leave school and the time their parents get home from work.
In the area of housing, Wright Muir is committed to preserving and supporting homeownership and wants to work towards providing a support system for people who are facing foreclosures and other issues regarding their homes.
Improving neighborhood safety, especially as it pertains to traffic, is another priority for Wright Muir, who has steadily advocated for the needs of the people, as she did as a legal aid attorney.
Wright Muir said, “I want to be able to hear the concerns of the community and be able to adequately address them.” The candidate is open to communicating with the public and seeking to meet their needs.
