On Tuesday May 13, City of Miami Gardens’ Mayor Shirley Gibson addressed community residents and businesses at her Fifth Annual Mayor’s State of the City Address held at Florida Memorial University’s Lou Rawls Theater. Following the address a Mardi Gras style reception was held to celebrate the City’s fifth anniversary as an incorporated municipality.

In 2003, after many years of neglect and unmet needs, community leaders, including Shirley Gibson and residents successfully mobilized a campaign for Miami Gardens to be incorporated as the 33rd municipality in Miami-Dade. The new City of Miami Gardens created local government accountability, increased resources, and provided localized community services. The city is the third largest city (population 105,457) in Miami–Dade County, after Miami and Hialeah.

“It’s an honor to be the City’s first mayor,” said Mayor Gibson. “Reflecting prior to incorporation and these last five years, I realize that faith, a dream, hard work, great people, and a dedicated team can bring about the most positive changes and outcomes within individuals and places most could never imagine. Incorporating this City was a huge undertaking with many unforeseen challenges; however with vision and persistence, we are now celebrating our fifth anniversary as a model of what a can-do philosophy can accomplish.”

For Mayor Gibson, the fifth anniversary of the city is also a milestone for South Florida. She said, “This is a celebration of a community of which people said it could not be done.”

Miami Gardens is a solid, working and middle class community of unique diversity. It is the largest predominantly African-American municipality in the State of Florida and boasts thousands of Caribbean residents.
