The Broward School Board recently approved 12 new charter applications for schools on the county. Charter schools are publicly funded, but privately run schools which are at liberty to set curriculums along with that of the state, but must adhere to the state’s class-size rules.

The new charter schools could begin operating in August, assuming they all find suitable operating sites. The new approvals mean that Broward could have 60 charter schools operating by August.

The schools are as follows:

• Imagine Charter School (now Day School at Coral Springs) in Coral Springs
• Adam-Young Learning Academy (an elementary school) in Fort Lauderdale
• Advantage Academy of Broward (elementary school) in Tamarac
• Charter School of Excellence (elementary school) in Davie
• Downtown Elementary School – Fort Lauderdale
• Florida High School for Accelerated Learners – Lauderhill
• Florida High School for Accelerated Learners, North Broward – Lauderhill
• Florida High School for Accelerated Learners, South Broward – Miramar
• Henry McNeal Turner Charter School (elementary) – Fort Lauderdale
• Jose Marti Language Academy Charter School (K8) - Location not given
• RISE Academy School of Science & Technology (K8) – No location yet
• West Broward Elementary Charter – Sunrise

The new schools will provide capacity for an estimated 3,600 students, with the largest being the Jose Marti Language Academy which is expected to open with as many as 710 students.
