A judge in New York has ordered the defense not to hand over any
information to the media in the case against a Guyanese-born suspect
accused of plotting to blow up the John F. Kennedy International
Airport last year.
Judge Dora Irizarry ruled that any information United States federal
prosecutors share with the defense in the case against Russell
Defreitas, 64, should not be discussed or otherwise shared with the
media.
She warned that a breach of her order, which includes prohibition on
information from court transcripts and notes, would be in contempt of
court.
Prosecutors working on the case of the former air cargo worker said it
would take months to sift through classified materials that may be
applicable to the case.
Justice Irizarry is overseeing the case in which Defreitas stands accused of being the mastermind of a plot to blow up fuel tanks and a capillary system of pipes that runs beneath the airport.
Prosecutors charged that Defreitas advanced the plot by conducting surveillance of the airport using photographs, a video camera and satellite images.
Defreitas has been in custody since June last year.
Three other Caribbean nationals, including two other Guyanese nationals, have also been charged.
But Guyanese Abdel Nur, 57, and Abdul Kadir, 55, as well as Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahim, 62, remain in custody in Trinidad and Tobago awaiting extradition.
