Mahammad "MAQ" Qureshi, Chairman & CEO of Cricket Council USA, is the founder of 20/20 Cricket in the United States of America. This exciting, fast paced 20/20 Cricket was on full display at the USA WORLD CUP CRICKET TOURNAMENT.
The Tournament, sponsored by the MAQ GROUP, was played during the Thanksgiving Weekend (November 26-28, 1999) at Frost Park in Dania Beach, Florida. Four Teams participated in the Tournament: Southern California All Stars, Pakistan All-Stars, Canada All Stars and the South Florida All Stars.
Notable Cricketers played in the Tournament including Imran Awan (Pakistan All Star & USA National Cricket Team member), Rashid Zia (Southern California All-Star), Nadeem Yousuf (former Pakistan First Class player), Wayne Copeland (Southern California All-Star), Rodney Cutting ( father of West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edward), Jeff Miller (South Florida All-Star ), Mark Johnson (former USA National Cricket Team member/South Florida All-Star ), Dave Wallace (South Florida All-Star), Dave Ramkishan (wicket keeper South Florida All-Star).
The Pakistan All-Star Team led by Captain Mahammad Qureshi won the tournament and was presented the Championship Trophy by Dania Beach Mayor Jim Cali.
Cricket fans who attended the USA WORLD CUP CRICKET TOURNAMENT were receptive to 20/20 Cricket. They were intrigued by the fact that a Cricket match could be played in less that 3 hours. This reaffirmed MAQ's vision that the new breed of Cricket fans in the United States would accept and support 20/20 Cricket.
Through MAQ's perseverance and financial backing throughout the years, Cricket Council USA is now poised to stage the MAQ T20 International Cricket Tournament '08 which will be played during the Memorial Day Weekend at the Cricket Stadium in the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.
