Jamaica got off to an impressive start in their quest for
the Goldson Spine Rehabilitation Trophy in the Lauderhill International Cricket
Competition with a solid eight wicket defeat of Guyana, last Saturday at the
Lauderhill Sports Complex.
Jamaica winning the toss elected to field
and was able to limit the Guyanese batting to 178 runs in their allotted 20
overs, despite some solid batting from Masood Mohamed 59 with 6 fours and 3
sixes, and Faizai Sheriff 43 with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Neville
Dawkins with three for 34 and Damion Wellington two for 29 were mainly
responsible for the Guyanese demise.
Jamaica in reply romped to 179 runs off
17.1 overs after a good opening stance of 83 runs by Shawn Beckford 54 (6
fours, 3 sixes) and Ken Wright 45 (2 fours, 4 sixes), and a solid third wicket
stand of 72 runs with Mark Johnson undefeated 46 (3 fours, 4 sixes) and Shawn
Riley undefeated 18.
Meanwhile
in the evenings curtain raiser Trinidad and
Tobago won a squeaker over the Windward
Islands by eight runs. After winning the toss and chose to bat, T
& T amassed a total of 203 for 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. They
received valuable contributions from Timothy Surubally 41, Baliram Nayaik 40,
Ivan Seenathsingh 38 and Lutchman Laggan 33.
The Windward
in their reply came close with 195 for 6 wickets off their allotted 20 overs.
They were led by the formidable Joey Pierre 43, Ashton Denis 40 and Bert Davis
who scored a blistering 28 which included 5 fours. Prim Singh two for 32 and
Nicolas Mitto two for 14 were the more successful bowlers for Trinidad.
