Known as
the ‘Spice Island’,
Grenada today (February 7)
celebrates 34 years of independence from Britain. The name ‘spice island’
was not lightly bestowed upon the island, which is a large producer of many
spices, especially nutmeg, which is proudly displayed on their national flag.
Grenada is a three island state, with the largest island Grenada, Carriacou,
and Petit Martinique. While Grenada
is mountainous, Carriacou is known for its miles of sandy beaches.
The islands
boast a lush vegetation, but hidden beneath the greenness and vibrancy of this
island paradise is the volcanic past, remnants of which still lurks beneath the
blue waters of the ocean.
But the
islands offer a great haven for eco-tourists who would no doubt be taken in by
the rain forest and the excellent hiking trails it has to offer.
Yet Grenada is not
without a sordid past, one veiled by its beautiful landscape and warm, friendly
people. The people of Grenada
have for the last couple of decades enjoy a peaceful existence and have had
infrastructural improvement and positive growth, while still staying true to
their lifestyle, reminiscent of the Caribbean
of old.
As
Grenadians at home and in the Diaspora celebrate 34 years of independence, it
is hoped that their home country continues to thrive and that while disasters
may beset them and the trials of the rapidly shrinking world may pose a
challenge, their people will exude the resilience necessary to rise above all
that is negative and view the world with renewed hope and possibilities.
Let’s help Grenada
celebrate 34 years of independence!
