The Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and the management of the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine campus, have settled wage increases for university administrative staff, after almost two months of negotiations.

From July, workers will receive a 15 per cent increase, according to President General of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union, Errol McLeod.

McLeod said the OWTU signed off on the agreement granting six per cent in 2006, five per cent in 2007 and four per cent in 2008.

The union leader said the wage battle which had disrupted classes and examinations at the institution had finally ended but he admitted that his union did not get everything it demanded.

Still, he said workers were in a better financial position than before.

To the beat of drums and the sound of trumpets and steelpan, the workers rejoiced after hearing that they would receive improved salaries.
