The
Trinidad & Tobago government has allocated $50 million (US$7.9 million) to
the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) to help the agency
prepare for the Hurricane Season which started June 1, Minister of National
Security Martin Joseph disclosed Friday.
"In
2006, the ODPM received $21 million (US$3.4) to fund its annual operations.
This year the allocation to the ODPM was increased to $50 million in keeping
with the importance of the role which the ODPM plays in ensuring the safety and
security of citizens in times of disaster," the Minister said during
Friday’s launch of Disaster Preparedness Month there.
He said the
government is taking the necessary steps to prepare for any disaster.
"We
are planning for the worst and if the worst comes we are prepared to get the
best possible outcome. We are seeking to reduce risks in the most effective way
possible and building the necessary capabilities to do so," he said.
Paul
Saunders, ODPM chief executive officer, said June 1 not only marked the start
of the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season, but also the start of an aggressive
education campaign by the ODPM.
